Industry / Markets

KERAFOL® has many years of experience in a wide variety of applications in the field of environmental technology. Whether in the treatment of landfill leachate, liquid manure or fermentation residues, in the concentration of microalgae or in the supply of oxygen in fish farming. Our membrane discs for filtration and aeration can score with their advantages in every area.

Areas of application

Environmental technology

Filtration of process liquids and waste water

The ceramic membrane discs from KERAFOL® enable sterile filtration of very different media. This enables effective and high-quality treatment of wastewater.
Bellmer Klaeranlage

The biological treatment stage can be filtered out of a wastewater treatment plant (MBR membrane bio-reactor) and digested sludge can be concentrated.
There is also the possibility of gray water filtration.
These processes are becoming increasingly important as more and more regions are struggling with water shortages (e.g. Southern Europe).
There are indications that legislation will create opportunities to reuse wastewater to a greater extent than before.

Wastewater contaminated with impurities and particles can be removed using flotation processes. The ceramic membrane discs of KERAFOL® are used to introduce finely dispersed gas bubbles directly into the liquid to be cleaned. The particles adhere to the bubbles and are transported to the surface of the liquid. There, the solids can be separated with the aid of a skimmer. RMF Rotating Membrane Filtration has clear advantages over DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) in terms of both design and energy consumption.

Water and wastewater treatment

The Dynamic Cross Flow Filtration can score with its advantages in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Whenever highly viscous liquids or a thickening process are involved, DCFF gains in importance. The technology can be used for black water, gray water, sludge and leachate. Rotary filtration is ideal for use in decentralized systems and for use in membrane bioreactors (aerobic or anaerobic).

Agricultural technology

Liquid manure and fermentation residues are used as natural fertilizers due to their high availability, the nutrients they contain (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compounds) and the lack of some mineral fertilizers (especially phosphate).

Filteranlage

However, the different composition – both of the manure from different livestock and of digestate – as well as the different requirements of the respective crops rarely represent a well-suited combination.
In addition, liquid manure and fermentation residues consist largely of water, which means that an unnecessarily large amount of fuel is consumed during application in the field.

Due to the rotation filtration a large proportion of the water can be removed and used for other purposes. In combination with other processes, various fractions can be obtained from liquid manure and fermentation residues, in which the respective nutrients are present in concentrated form.
